Do you know about the Little Free Library in Lakewood? Actually there are four in the area. You may ask – What is a Little Free Library? It’s the brainchild of Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin. Honoring his mother who was a former school teacher, in 2009 he built a model of a little one room schoolhouse and put it on a post in his front yard. It was filled with books, and a sign said FREE books. Everyone loved it when they saw what a great idea it is.
The Little Free Library website defines it this way: “It’s a ‘take a book, return a book’ gathering place where neighbors share their favorite literature and stories. In its most basic form, a Little Free Library is a box full of books where anyone may stop by and pick up a book (or two) and bring back another book to share. You can, too!”
Historically, free public libraries have been a gift to all in the community. Andrew Carnegie supported 2,509 large public libraries during the turn of the last century. From 1893 – 1914 Miss Lutie Sterns traveled to almost 1,400 locations with traveling little libraries. The intent was clear, to exchange good books at no cost, with anyone who wants to be a part of this positive community activity.
Each Little Free Library has a designated “steward” who constructs the house (kits and templates to download are available) for the books, and posts it in their front yard, caring for the upkeep and needs of the library. Did you know that this idea has taken off worldwide? Families as far as Sri Lanka, India and many other countries have set up Little Free Libraries.
“By January of 2014, the total number of registered Little Free Libraries in the world is conservatively estimated to be between 10,000 and 12,000, with thousands more being built.” What a wonderful way to connect with your neighbors.
